The Writing Artist- e e cummings
Today's writing artist pick is American Edward Estlin (e. e.) Cummings. He was a poet, novelist, painter, essayist and playwright with a transcendental belief system. During his time in the ambulance corps, he was accused on suspicion of espionage and was sent to prison. His imprisonment is what inspired his first novel The Enormous Room. Upon completing his military service, he traveled often to France and other parts of the world working as a portrait artist and essayist for Vanity Fair. Later in life, he became a guest professor for Harvard University Below is a self-portrait and his poem I Will Wade Out.
I Will Wade Out
i will wade out
till my thighs are steeped in burning flowers
I will take the sun in my mouth
and leap into the ripe air
Alive
with closed eyes
to dash against darkness
in the sleeping curves of my body
Shall enter fingers of smooth mastery
with chasteness of sea-girls
Will i complete the mystery
of my flesh
I will rise
After a thousand years
lipping
flowers
And set my teeth in the silver of the moon
- e e cummings
